A Minister And His Warped Priorities…

A Minister And His Warped Priorities…

And so, Prof. Tahir Mamman, Nigeria’s education Minister proposed or supported the idea that Nigerian children would henceforth have to be 18 years before being admitted in universities!

Before now, it was pegged at 16-17.

There has been outrage across the country but knowing the Nigerian political elite, it might just be ignored as most public servants behave like 10th century emperors!

So, what happens to whizkids that are often promoted rapidly due to their high IQ?

There are super endowed kids that don’t follow regular chronological school ages.

What would be the value of such a policy?

Some claim maturity but we know that some politicians above 50 have continued to behave like kindergarten kids sadly – reason development keeps eluding Nigeria.

Sometimes age is merely a chronological assessment of time.

But my simple questions are;

Why is that policy a priority at this time?

Nigerian education sector has never met the UN annual budgetary benchmark of 26%

Nigeria has more than 20million out-of -school children, a global highest!

Nigerian public schools are almost being abandoned as Private schools seem to be dominant at the basic education level.

There are child-marriages that impact girl-child literacy!

The almajiri system ought to be improved to allow young boys to get well rounded education

The Nigerian constitution puts the marriage age at 18 but there are politicians marrying underage girls.🙄

The literacy level in Northern region is abysmally low and poverty high!

There aren’t enough vocational schools for skill acquisition.

How good is Nigerian basic school curriculum ?

How many teachers’s training colleges are functional?

Has the minister cared to understand why there is low enrollment in schools especially in his region?

It is just disheartening how certain policies that are very retrogressive take the time of Nigerian public officers!

So if those already enrolled are to sit out till they are 18, how would they be engaged in an era parents try to occupy their kids?

To think that this policy is being pushed by a Professor, an academic, a minister of education?

What thought processes went into this?🤔🤦‍♀️

Answers anyone?
