The Ahiaeke market in Umuahia LGA was agog on Friday as traders, mostly market women, rejoiced over the solar-powered streetlights newly installed in their market by Senator Austin Akobundu, the Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
The installation of the streetlights was part of the fulfilment of Senator Akobundu’s promise to install streetlights in selected markets across the six Local Government Areas that make up Abia Central Senatorial District in commemoration of his one-year anniversary in the Senate.
Akobundu had promised to make markets in the senatorial district more attractive, safer and more secure for commercial activities at night in order to make goods and services available to the people even late into the night thereby also increasing sales and profits of traders.
The popular Apumiri market in Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA and Obikabia market in Isiala Ngwa North LGA had two weeks ago been lit up with solar-powered streetlights provided by the Ikwuano-born Senator.
More markets are billed to benefit from the “Light Up the Markets Initiative” of the Senator in the coming days.
