The Senator representing Abia Central, Senator Austin Akobundu has insisted that the late former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu deserve to be immortalised for his heroics in the conduct of the June 12 1993 election won by Chief MKO Abiola but eventually annulled by the then military government headed by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd).
Recall that the Senate had a heated debate on the issue shortly before their break where Senator Austin Akobundu disagreed sharply with some of his colleagues who opposed the motion for the immortalisation of the late former NEC Chairman, saying Nwosu demonstrated exceptional courage in the face of extreme pressure and threats by the then military government.
Speaking on an AIT political programme, ‘Inside the Parliament’ on Tuesday, 1st April 2025, Akobundu reiterated his earlier stance on the floor of the Senate that Prof Humphrey Nwosu deserves to be immortalised for his innovative Option A4 system and for midwifing what is known to be the freest, fairest and most credible election in the history of Nigeria to date.
“You can’t talk about June 12, you can’t talk about NADECO, the role they played, their activism that hastened the exit of the military; you can’t talk about the victory of Abiola; you can’t talk about the validation of his election results without making due and copious references to the role Humphrey Nwosu and his team played. This is where I stand!” Akobundu declared.
