The National Chairman,
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
Plot 436 Zambezi Crescent, Maitama District
Abuja, FCT, Nigeria
Dear Sir
Urgent Call For A By-Election In Edo Central Senatorial District
I write as a concerned citizen and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly to draw your urgent attention to a matter of constitutional and democratic importance concerning Edo Central Senatorial District.
Following the swearing-in of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Governor of Edo State in November 2024, the seat representing Edo Central in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has remained vacant. The Senate has since formally declared the seat vacant, in accordance with its internal procedures.
This prolonged vacancy now extending beyond six months has denied the constituents of Edo Central their constitutionally guaranteed right to representation in the National Assembly. Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) mandates that a by-election be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) within 30 days whenever a seat in the National Assembly becomes vacant.
The continued absence of a Senator from Edo Central undermines not only democratic governance but also denies the district access to legislative deliberations, federal representation, and development opportunities. This is a serious democratic deficit that must be promptly addressed.
Given the time that has elapsed, and the increasing political and developmental marginalization of our people, I respectfully urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to initiate and expedite the process for conducting a by-election to fill the vacant Edo Central Senatorial seat.
I trust in the Commission’s commitment to the rule of law, equity, and the sustenance of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. I am confident that immediate steps will be taken to remedy this situation without further delay.
Please accept the assurances of my highest regards.
E-Signed:
Rt. Hon. Chief Victor Sabor Edoror
Former Speaker,
Edo State House of Assembly
The Atanakpa of Esanland
