Elumelu Establishes N5 Million Scholarship Fund, Pledges N2.8 Billion Infrastructure Projects at Inaugural Matriculation of the College of Nursing Science, Onicha-Uku

The College of Nursing Science, Onicha-Uku of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba; marked a major milestone today with its inaugural matriculation ceremony, featuring a significant philanthropic announcement from Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.

 

In his keynote address, Rt. Hon Elumelu expressed gratitude to God and commended the Delta State Governor; Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori and the Federal Government for their collaborative roles in establishing the College. He praised the institution’s rapid growth and described it as one of the most promising nursing colleges in Nigeria and beyond.

 

To support academic excellence, Elumelu announced a scholarship grant of N1 million each for the top five graduating students of the institution, totaling N5 million. In addition, he unveiled progressive plans to enhance student welfare and academic infrastructure, pledging to sponsor the construction of:

 

A 50-bedroom student hostel

A 500-capacity multipurpose hall

A 1,000-capacity auditorium, to be named the College of Nursing Sciences Auditorium/Civic Centre, Onicha-Uku

 

The combined value of these projects is estimated at about N2.8 billion, with construction expected to begin shortly and the auditorium/civic center slated for completion within three months.

Speaking earlier, Dr. Victor Azubuike Osiatuma, Medical Director of FMC Asaba, reflected on the College’s establishment in 2023, highlighting its role in addressing Nigeria’s growing need for competent, compassionate healthcare professionals. He noted the College’s impressive growth trajectory, backed by a committed faculty, modern facilities, and strategic clinical partnerships.

 

Hon. Emma Bazim Chinye, Executive Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area, also spoke at the event, assuring continued security and support to ensure a safe and enabling learning environment.

 

In his speech, the special guest of honor; his Excellency; Rt. Hon (Elder) Sheriff F.O Oborevwori the Executive Governor of Delta State commended the staff and students of the college, stressing the vitality of their profession to the state and humanity at large. He eulogized Rt. Hon Elumelu referring to him as an exemplary leader and brother. He encouraged his commitment to the growth of the college.

 

The matriculation ceremony was capped with an inaugural lecture by Dr. Charles Oloriegbie, Provost of Soaster College of Nursing, Aba-Unor, followed by the administration of the Matriculation Oath to new students by the Provost of the College.
