FCT NUJ Elections: Baseless Forgery Allegations Against Grace Ike and Team Unveiled

By Ademola Adepoju (omooba)

The upcoming Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT election has been marred by a smear campaign involving baseless allegations of certificate forgery against key contestants, including Miss Grace Ike, Miss Edeh Sandra Ogechukwu, Mr Yahaya Ndambabo and Mr Jide Oyekunle Adeyemi.

The petition, written by Mr Emeka Nze, Mr Victorson Agbenson and Mr Johnchuks Onuanyim, alleges that the accused forged Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) certificates from the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ), Abuja. However, the claims lack merit and appear to be politically motivated.

*Examining the Allegations*

A closer look at the accusations reveals a lack of substantive evidence. The IIJ is a reputable institution that uses stringent measures to authenticate certificates. Any claim of forgery can be verified directly with the institution, yet the petitioners did not take such a step. Instead, the accusers relied on vague assumptions, raising questions about their motives.

Furthermore, the accused have consistently demonstrated their professional qualifications and integrity in their journalism careers. Their track records speak volumes, making the allegations appear more like an attempt to tarnish reputations than a genuine pursuit of justice.

*A Campaign of Distraction*

Observers have noted that the timing of the allegations, coinciding with the NUJ election campaigns, suggests a deliberate attempt to distract voters and undermine the credibility of the candidates. Such tactics not only detract from the democratic process but also cast a shadow over the integrity of those making the allegations.

Miss Grace Ike, known for her exemplary leadership and dedication to the journalism profession, has categorically denied the accusations, describing them as a “desperate ploy to derail the progress of genuine leadership for NUJ FCT.” She emphasized that her credentials are verifiable and challenged the petitioners to provide concrete evidence of their claims.

*The Need for Due Process*

The election process must focus on the issues that matter to journalists in the FCT—press freedom, welfare and professional development—rather than on baseless accusations. FCT NUJ members deserve a fair and transparent election, free from smear campaigns and distractions.

In the face of these allegations, the accused have demonstrated resilience and commitment to their campaigns, urging voters to see through the ploy and focus on electing leaders who will truly represent their interests.

*Conclusion*

The allegations of certificate forgery against Miss Grace Ike, Miss Edeh Sandra Ogechukwu, Mr Yahaya Ndambabo and Mr Jide Oyekunle Adeyemi are not only baseless but also a disservice to the integrity of the FCT NUJ election process. FCT NUJ members are urged to demand evidence-based accusations and focus on electing leaders based on their vision and capacity to drive the union forward.By their fruits ,we shall know them.
