Grace Ike Emphasizes Ethical Journalism, Unity As NUJ FCT Welcomes 2026

The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called on journalists in the Federal Capital Territory to recommit themselves to ethical journalism, unity, and professionalism as they enter the year 2026.

Ms Ike in a New Year message to members of the Council, commended journalists for their resilience and dedication in the past year.

She noted that despite challenges, they remained steadfast in upholding the values of the profession.

“The passing year tested our resilience, professionalism, and collective resolve, yet you stood firm, upholding the ideals of our noble profession with courage and commitment,” she said.

She described the New Year as a time for renewed hope and greater responsibility, stressing that journalists remain central to democratic development and social stability. According to her, “as journalists, we remain the conscience of society and custodians of truth,” adding that the role of the media in shaping narratives and promoting national cohesion has “never been more critical.”

Ms Ike assured members that the NUJ FCT Council would intensify efforts to improve welfare and professional growth. “In 2026, we move forward with renewed vigour,” she said, reaffirming the Council’s commitment to “members’ welfare, professional development, and unity,” as well as continued advocacy for improved working conditions and capacity-building opportunities.

The NUJ FCT Chairman also raised concerns over the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation, urging journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards. “Ethical journalism remains the cornerstone of our profession,” she stated, calling on members to remain guided by the NUJ Code of Ethics to ensure reports are accurate, fair, and balanced.

Emphasising unity as the strength of the Council, Ike said solidarity and mutual respect were essential for building a supportive and professional media community. She encouraged journalists to embrace innovation while remaining committed to core values and public interest.

“I urge every member to approach 2026 with optimism, responsibility, and a renewed sense of mission,” she said.

Ike wished all members and their families a peaceful and prosperous New Year, praying that 2026 would bring “good health, professional fulfilment, and collective success” to journalists in the FCT.
