Group Condemn Imo Killings, call for Investigation

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) strongly condemns the recent acts of violence and destruction perpetrated by individuals suspected to be soldiers in Umualumaku Umueze, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area, Imo State.

The group in a statement by its national coordinator expressed sadness over the reprisal attack, which followed the tragic killings of security personnel as the Oriendu Community witness destruction of property, including shops, drinking joints, and other businesses, in the community describing acts as flagrant violation of the rules of engagement for soldiers involved in internal security operations.

HURIWA demands that those responsible for these acts of violence be identified, apprehended, and brought to justice without delay adding that those who engage in criminal activities must face the consequences of their actions.

‘’We appreciate the Nigerian Army’s denial of involvement in these destructive actions, and we urge all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into these incidents to ascertain the true perpetrators. ‘’

‘’We stand in solidarity with the residents of Umualumaku Umueze and all affected individuals. We call upon the government, law enforcement agencies, and the military to ensure the safety and security of the people in the affected area and to take swift action to restore normalcy and protect the rights and property of law-abiding citizens.’’

The civil rights group sympathises with the families of the security personnel who lost their lives in the unfortunate incidents.

‘’We also appreciate the commitment of the acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, in pursuing inter-agency collaboration to uncover those responsible for the recent killings of security operatives in Imo State.’’

The group reiterates call for justice, accountability, and the restoration of peace in Umualumaku Umueze and its surrounding areas
