Group Criticize Minister of Youths over NYSC Internship

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized the Minister of Youths Development, Mr. Ayodele Olawande’s plan to introduce an internship program in NYSC, stating that it is unnecessary since the NYSC already has a well-structured department for skills acquisition established since 2012.

HURIWA in a statement by its national coordinator encouraged the ministers of youth development to focus on dusting up the file on the proposed NYSC Youth Trust Fund and canvass immediate signing into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as this will empower corps members with capital to start businesses using their acquired skills while serving.

The Trust Fund would take millions of young graduates who completed their service year out of poverty and create wealth creators.

The group recalled that around March 2023, then Minister for Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare had disclosed that a reform bill submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari will see N14bn injected into the National Youth Service Corps through training facilities and start-up capital financing for corps entrepreneurs.

HURIWA stated that there is no need for introducing an internship program if both ministers had taken cognizance of existing records since a much more comprehensive directorate program has been institutionalized within NYSC since 2012.
