“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” – Joseph Campbell
Professor Humphrey Nwobu Nwosu was a true hero who left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s democratic journey. As a distinguished political scientist, he conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, despite the ruling military regime’s opposing agenda. This achievement earned him a place in the annals of Nigeria’s chequered democratic history. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Nigerians, and his impact on the country’s electoral process remains unparalleled.
Prof. Nwosu’s courage and conviction in the face of adversity were a testament to his stoic character. He remained steadfast in his commitment to free and fair elections, even when it meant going against the powers that be. His dedication to democracy, the electoral process, and the rule of law earned him the respect and admiration of his peers, as well as the gratitude of observers worldwide.
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
Prof. Nwosu’s life reflected this quote, as he stood tall in the face of adversity, refusing to compromise his values or betray the trust of the electorates. His leadership and vision inspired a generation of electoral commissioners, scholars, researchers, and staff, shaping the country’s electoral process. Notably, he designed the Option A4 open ballot system to curb electoral fraud, built the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, and initiated permanent staff status for the commission, prioritizing staff welfare.
As a devoted family man and humanist, Prof. Nwosu’s legacy extends far beyond his professional accomplishments. His love for God, humanity, and community shone through in everything he did, inspiring many to follow in his footsteps. He was a mentor, role model, and father figure to many, leaving a gaping hole in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
Prof. Nwosu’s commitment to his family was unwavering, and he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. A devout Christian, his faith guided him in all his endeavors. Throughout his illustrious career, Prof. Nwosu received numerous awards for his contributions to democracy and good governance. However, it was not the awards that motivated him, but his commitment to serving humanity and doing what was right.
Eulogies poured in at the Yar’adua Center Abuja and other locations as family, friends, associates, and admirers gathered to pay tribute to the renowned political scientist and administrator. Everyone testified to his dedication, hard work, and commitment to democracy, the electoral process, and good governance.
Many have advocated for Prof. Nwosu’s immortalization by the Federal Government of Nigeria, citing his pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic history. He is deserving of a posthumous Nobel Peace Prize, a testament to his efforts to promote democracy, peace, and stability in Nigeria. While some oppose his immortalization for personal reasons, his legacy remains a beacon of inspiration.
“The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.” – Benjamin Disraeli
As we mourn the passing of this courageous hero, we celebrate his life and legacy. Let us honor his memory by exploring ways to truly honor his legacy, such as building a mausoleum or naming institutions and roads after him. May his exemplary life continue to inspire us to strive for excellence, stand up for what is right, and never give up in the face of adversity. May his memory guide and motivate us, shaping the course of Nigerian history as his remains are committed to mother earth today, March 28, 2025, in Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. Adieu, Professor Nwosu.
