…Supports Senator Ned Nwoko Ban on Use of Dollars Locally
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused President Tinubu’s government of working for the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, calling on the Nigerian government to stop floating the naira and legally enforce a ban on using US dollars in local transactions.
The right group in a statement by its national coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko expressed support to Senator Ned Nwoko’s motion which called for the use of only naira as legal tender in Nigeria, citing worsening economic conditions and ballooning living costs.
The group criticized Governor Olayemi Cadoso’s decision to float the naira, which strengthens foreign-denominated legal tenders like USD.
HURIWA recalled that Chief Gani Fawehinmi fighting against paying ministerial salaries in dollars during Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, accusing President Tinubu’s government of acting as undertakers for the IMF and World Bank by devaluing Nigeria’s national legal tender currency.
The group commended Senator Ned Nwoko for his efforts to rescue the diminishing naira, emphasizing that paying foreign workers in USD contributes significantly to capital flight from Nigeria and perpetuates neocolonial structures.
HURIWA disclosed its plan to convene a media roundtable with 100 CSOs in Nigeria pushing for legislative action banning USD from being used locally in commercial transactions due to its role in hastening current administration policies that devalue the naira at Western powers’ behest.
