HURIWA Applauds Legal Luminary, Prof. Azinge, on His Historic Coronation as 14th Asagba of Asaba

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has congratulated Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, on his ascension as the 14th Asagba of Asaba, hailing him as a towering figure in the field of human rights and a distinguished legal luminary.

Obi Azinge, who previously served as the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), has been recognized by HURIWA for his unwavering commitment to justice, human rights, and the rule of law.

In a statement released by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the association expressed its profound joy and pride at Obi Azinge’s coronation, noting that his emergence as the traditional ruler of Asaba marks a historic moment for the people of the Asaba Kingdom and the entire nation.

HURIWA emphasized that Prof. Azinge’s ascension to the throne is not only a testament to his academic and professional achievements but also a reflection of his deep connection to his roots and his unwavering dedication to the cultural heritage of the Asaba people.

“On behalf of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Obi Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, on his crowning as the 14th Asagba of Asaba. Prof. Azinge is not only a legal titan but also a revered human rights advocate who has made significant contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria. His ascension to the throne is a fitting recognition of his lifelong commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law,” Comrade Onwubiko stated.

HURIWA recalled that over 17 years ago, the association recognized Prof. Azinge as one of its icons of human rights, awarding him for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of human rights and constitutional law in Nigeria.

The association noted that Prof. Azinge’s scholarship and advocacy have had a lasting impact on the legal landscape of the country, inspiring a new generation of lawyers and human rights defenders.

“Prof. Azinge is a man of many firsts. He is not only the first Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to ascend the throne of his forefathers but also does so alongside his wife, who is also a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to their unparalleled knowledge, expertise, and dedication to the legal profession. Together, they represent the pinnacle of legal scholarship in Nigeria, and their joint ascension to the throne is a source of pride for the entire nation,” Onwubiko added.

HURIWA lauded Prof. Azinge’s versatility in constitutional law, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most profoundly knowledgeable legal minds. The association highlighted his numerous contributions to the body of legal knowledge in Nigeria, including his work at NIALS, where he served as Director-General, and his role in shaping the development of constitutional law in the country.
