…Calls for Immediate Action
The Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA), has condemned in strong terms, the criminal act of armed kidnapping of two students from the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi.
HURIWA in a statement by its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko affirmed that this appalling act of violence not only jeopardizes the safety of the educational institutions but also instils deep fear within the hearts of students and their families.
Expressing solidarity with the affected families and university community, HURIWA which called on the Benue State Government to take swift action against the kidnapping, proposed the implementation of capital punishment against kidnapper.
The statement partly reads: “We express our solidarity with the affected families and the university community during this distressing time.
We call on the security forces to immediately intensify efforts to locate and rescue the abducted students. It is imperative that law enforcement agencies act swiftly and decisively to confront the wave of insecurity that continues to plague our society.
Furthermore, we urge the Benue State government to take radical action against the scourge of kidnapping by implementing stringent laws that make kidnapping offences punishable by the death sentence. While this measure is severe, it may serve as a powerful deterrent against individuals and groups who engage in these criminal activities.
The government must recognize that comprehensive enforcement of laws against kidnapping is essential for three compelling reasons:
- **The Fundamental Right to Security**: The safety of every citizen is non-negotiable. By enforcing severe penalties for kidnapping, the government affirms its commitment to protecting the rights and lives of its citizens, thereby reinforcing the idea that life is sacred and must be defended at all costs.
chapter 2, section 14.-(1)(b)
(b) the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government
- **Restoring Public Trust in Governance**: When citizens witness effective responses to crime, their trust in government and law enforcement grows. This trust is crucial for fostering a cooperative relationship between the public and authorities, enabling better reporting of crimes and community involvement in safety initiatives.
- **Economic Resilience through Stability**: The prevalence of kidnapping creates an environment of fear that hampers economic activity and investment. By implementing rigorous anti-kidnapping measures, the government can create a stable atmosphere that encourages business and tourism, ultimately contributing to economic growth and the well-being of the community.
As we await further developments regarding this incident, we reaffirm our commitment to advocating for policies that prioritize the safety of Nigerian students and all citizens. The fight against kidnapping requires a collective effort, and we call upon all stakeholders to unite in confronting this grave challenge.
Let us work together to create a safer and more secure environment for everyone, particularly for our young people pursuing education.”
