Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has responded to an address concerning the integrity and reputation of former Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, said that the association received credible information and evidence pointing to the existence of powerful political forces that are exerting undue pressure on civil society organizations, the media, and other actors in Abuja and Lagos.

The right group also frowned at what it described as the intention of fabricating false scandals and launching a strategic media campaign to tarnish the image of Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

“These forces are motivated by ulterior motives and are seeking to smear his reputation but it is imperative That we bring this matter to the public’s attention to ensure transparency and uphold the principles of justice and fairness.

“First and foremost, we would like to remind the public of some of the remarkable achievements of Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi during his tenure as the governor of Enugu State.

“His commitment to good governance, infrastructural development, healthcare, and education in the state has left a lasting positive impact on the lives of the people. The former governor’s leadership was marked by transparency, inclusiveness, and a deep dedication to the welfare of the citizens, HURIWA noted.

According to its Convener, Onwubiko, Governor Ugwuanyi made significant promises to the people of Enugu State, and lived up to many of them such as; the opening of Nsukka, the town where University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, is situated, several development projects for the university town.

He also mentioned other areas such as; Opi-Nsukka Road and the construction of a secretariat annex at Edeoballa to house state civil servants working in the Enugu North senatorial zone as some of Ugwuanyi’s achievements while in the state’s number one office.

The association continued, “Governor Ugwuanyi also built a magnificent sports stadium at Nsukka to encourage sports activities in the region. Furthermore, he established a brand-new University of Medical and Applied Sciences in Igboano, Enugu North Senatorial Zone, showing his commitment to education and healthcare.

“His development efforts extended beyond Nsukka, encompassing the other two senatorial zones of Enugu East and Enugu West. Notably, he expanded and rehabilitated the Ngwo-9th Mile Road, known as Miliken Hill, which had been neglected for years.

“He also relocated the Building Material/Electrical Parts Market near Kenyatta, reducing traffic congestion and improving the living conditions of traders and wayfarers.

“In the realm of infrastructure, Governor Ugwuanyi dualized the road from Emene to Nike Lake Resort Hotel, easing traffic gridlock and enhancing connectivity.

But despite all his achievements, HURIWA lamented that there are some who still question the extent of Governor Ugwuanyi’s contributions to the state. It’s worth noting that no government can meet all the diverse needs and expectations of its citizens. Nevertheless, the accomplishments of his administration are undeniable.

“Governor Ugwuanyi was also worker-friendly, ensuring the prompt payment of salaries and other entitlements to civil servants, as the organised labour, praised his administration for approving the minimum wage, promotions, and extending the service years of teachers, and also provided housing accommodation for civil servants in Elim Estate.

“These accomplishments were acknowledged by various voices. including former junior Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Dubem Onyia, and members of the opposition party, like Dr. Ben Nwoye, who noted that the governor’s media aides could have done more to showcase his achievements

“Therefore, these sinister plots and politically motivated allegations against him are not only baseless but also part of a deliberate effort by certain individuals to tarnish his image, HURIWA added.

The association said it believes that such individuals are acting out of self-interest and fear that Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi may be considered for a significant political appointment from President Tinubu, stressing that their actions are driven by partisan politics and a desire to undermine a public servant who has earned the trust and respect of the people of Enugu State.
