 IWD: NAWOJ FCT Reaffirms Commitment to Gender Equality Push, Women’s Advancement

The Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang has reaffirmed the association’s commitment towards fighting for women advancement and the push for gender equality.

The chairperson in a statement commemorating the 2025 International Women’s Day IWD themed “Accelerate Action” stated that women are instrumental in shaping the future of the nation.

 

She emphasized the need to recognize the contributions that women continue to make in leadership, business, innovations in technology, health, politics and in all spheres of life and the fight for gender equality.

 

“On this special day therefore, we stand in solidarity with women in FCT as we join other women globally to accelerate action and push for gender equity.

 

We acknowledge the strides we’ve made, but we also recognize the challenges that remain.”

 

Comrade Bassey reiterated that NAWOJ FCT is committed to continuing the fight for the empowerment of women, ensuring equal opportunities for all, and creating platforms where women’s voices are heard and valued.

 

She disclosed that the NAWOJ FCT’s sub-theme, “Amplifying the Voice of Rural Women”

underscores the urgent need to bridge gender gaps, uplift rural women, and create a society where all women have equal opportunities to thrive.”

 

 

The group called on the government agencies, traditional leaders, corporate bodies and the media to support rural women’s empowerment through sustainable policies, skill acquisition programs, healthcare service, social justice advocacy

“Women, particularly those in rural communities, continue to face challenges including limited access to education, economic opportunities, healthcare, and political representation. While progress has been made, there remains a pressing need to take deliberate and bold actions to break barriers that hinder women’s development.

As journalists and advocates for women’s rights, NAWOJ FCT is committed to using the power of the media to highlight gender issues, advocate for policies that empower women, and hold stakeholders accountable in ensuring an inclusive society.

Government agencies to implement and enforce policies that promote gender equality and provide sustainable support for rural women.

Traditional and community leaders to champion women’s empowerment and eliminate harmful cultural practices that hinder progress.

Corporate bodies and development partners to invest in skill acquisition, entrepreneurship programs, and healthcare services targeted at women in underserved communities.

The media to continue amplifying women’s voices and advocating for social justice and equal opportunities.” She stated.

“NAWOJ FCT remains steadfast in ensuring that women’s issues remain a priority. Through strategic partnerships, media advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives, we will continue to push for the empowerment of women across all sectors.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, let us not only reflect on the challenges but take decisive steps towards creating a future where every woman, regardless of her background, can achieve her full potential.
