May 30, 1967: A Pivotal Moment in History – The Declaration of Biafra

Today, we remember a significant event in Nigerian history that took place on May 30, 1967. It was on this day that Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the military Governor of Eastern Nigeria, proclaimed the region a sovereign state, now known as the Republic of Biafra.

 

The proclamation, made 57 years ago, marked a turning point in the region’s history. With these words, “Long live the Republic of Biafra! And May God protect all who live in her!”, Lieutenant Colonel Ojukwu underscored the significance of the declaration.

 

As we reflect on this momentous occasion, we honor the courage and conviction of those who played a role in shaping the course of history. The declaration of Biafra remains a poignant reminder of the complexities and challenges that have shaped our nation’s journey.

 

*The Proclamation:*

 

“Having mandated me to proclaim on your behalf, and in your name, that Eastern Nigeria be a sovereign independent Republic, Now, therefore I Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, military Governor of Eastern Nigeria, by virtue of the authority, and pursuant to the principles, recited above, do hereby solemnly proclaim that the territory and region known as and called Eastern Nigeria together with their Continental shelf and territorial waters, shall henceforth be an Independent Sovereign State of the name and title of THE REPUBLIC OF BIAFRA.”

 

These words, spoken on May 30, 1967, continue to resonate through history, serving as a reminder of the region’s struggle for self-determination and the enduring impact of that era.
