It is with a deep sense of loss that we mourn the death of Hajia Rafat Salami, former Secretary, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, which sad event occurred in the early hours of Friday.
This is as the zone was further shocked by the news of the death of Prophetess Ogonnaya Umeham, a former Secretary, NAWOJ, FCT Chapter.
NAWOJ Zone D joins family, friends, colleagues, and associates of late Hajia Salami and Prophetess Umeham in grieving over the sudden passing of these vibrant journalists.
Hajia Salami, who distinguished herself in the journalism profession and the union, was recently reelected as the Treasurer, International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria.
She had earlier served as Assistant Secretary of the IPI.
Hajia Rafat, who until her death was Assistant Director, Digital Media, at the Voice of Nigeria (VON), would be remembered for her professionalism and passion for gender equality, but most of all, her advocacy for the protection of the rights of children with special needs as well as the welfare of their parents and caregivers.
In the same vein, the former NAWOJ secretary, who died Friday afternoon after a protracted illness, worked in many reputable media organisations, including the Daily Times of Nigeria.
Until her death, she was the News Editor, Weekenders Magazine, Abuja.
Hajia Salami has been buried according to Islamic rites in Abuja, while Prophetess Umeham’s family would announce details about her burial.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to their immediate families, management, and staff of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), and Weekenders Magazine, and all journalists in the FCT.
