OCHA Brigade Partners NANS, UNIZIK Students on Clean, Healthy Anambra

… Inaugurates OCHA-NANS Enforcement Unit

The Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (Ocha Brigade) has collaborated with National Association of Nigerian Students and Nnamdi Azikiwe University on the inauguration of the students wing of operation clean and healthy Anambra (OCHA-NANS).

The event which was held today at the University Auditorium, Garuba Square in Awka was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Charles Esimone, the Managing Director and Chief Superintendent of Ocha Brigade, Chief Celestine Anere, the UNIZIK SUG President, Comrade Izuchukwu Ejikeme, Comrade Ifenyinwa Cynthia, NANS Zone B secretary among others.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Unizik, Prof. Charles Esimone represented by the Dean, Students Affairs, Prof. Chinonso Achebe stated that the university community has been in the business of trying to keep the university environment clean and habitable for staff and students because according to him, that is part of the thrust of the present university government and noted that the partnership with Anambra’s Ocha Brigade was a welcome development.

He pointed out that at the level of university, that they have directorate of environment, at the level of the SUG, they have director of environment and now the collaboration with Ocha Brigade will help the school achieve its environment goals.

In his address at the occasion, the Managing Director and Chief Superintendent of Ocha Brigade, Chief Celestine Anere noted that the school environs especially the lodges were filthy, the drains clogged and pointed out that the school management and the SUG were key in sanitising the area.

Said he, ” This partnership with the University community will not only ensure a clean environment but help preserve the road infrastructure for the overall benefit of the university. Thus, the students need to work with the state officers in actualising the objectives of the brigade with proper guidance of the school authorities”.

He stressed that the main objective of the student’s brigade was to facilitate environmental cleanliness by sensitisation, monitoring for compliance and ensuring a smooth waste management within and around the school premises.

Furthermore, he announced that the six days training Camp of volunteers would begin on 23rd January at the NYSC permanent Orientation camp at Umuawulu, Awka South Local Government Area.

While inauguating the volunteers, he informed the students that the onus of ensuring clean and healthy unizik and by extension Anambra lies in their hands. He called on them to ensure that drainages around the university hostels and school areas are regularly cleaned/desilted and facilitate the arrest and prosecution of any person or group of persons that violate monthly sanitation exercise, defecate or urinate in unauthorized places within and outside the school or dump refuse on the road, drainage or other places.

On his part, the SUG President of UNIZIK, comrade Izuchukwu Ejikeme, noted that the initiative was apt and that the students love it because every student needed it.

” This initiative is highly commendable and I believe that together in partnership that we can build a liveable and prosperous Anambra”, he said.

Some students like Onwudiwe Chukwuemeka, NANS JJC environment director, Anambra State, Chikamso Chimara from Mechanical Engineering department, Chukwuemeka Oliobi, Director of environment, Environmental Sciences,  Emma Osegbo, DOS, Nursing Department and others who asked various questions during the interactive session of the event as was anchored by NANS Zone B secretary, Comrade Ifenyinwa Cynthia were promptly attended to by the MD of Ocha Brigade, Chief Anere and the Dean, Students affairs, Prof. Achebe.

Some highlights of the occasion included the inauguration of the volunteers, photo sessions among others.

Other dignitaries like Chief Ken Chukwura. Chief Security Officer of UNIZIK, the Rep of DPO, NPF ‘ B ‘ Division, DSP Osmond Ikeoha, the State Youth Leader of APGA, Dr. Tochukwu Obiadi and Hon Obiora Anaka  Special Assistant to Governor on Ocha Brigade were some of the people that graced the occasion.
