In a heartwarming event at his country home in Oloko, the Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Austin Akobundu and his wife, Mrs. Adeola Akobundu, hosted widows from across the community to celebrate their resilience and unveil new initiatives aimed at supporting them.
Mrs. Adeola Akobundu, known for her dedication to community service, spoke passionately about her commitment to widows.
“My focus is always on the welfare of the widows and I will not stop doing what I am doing. The prayers of widows are hefty, and I believe in their power,” she said. “Whenever I come home, I am always concerned and my husband knows my heartbeat, and together, we strive to make a difference. We need your prayers continuously.”
The event also featured an inspiring testimony from Mrs. Gift Chinenyenwa Isiguzo Uzoanya (née Ochiuwa), a widow who shared her journey of overcoming adversity.
“I was widowed seven years ago, which was an incredibly painful experience. But I drew comfort from God and was inspired to write my book, ‘Trials and Truths of Widowhood’,” she shared.
She further commended the Senator’s family for their efforts. “I deeply appreciate the convener and her husband for this impactful gesture. They are truly making a difference. To all the widows here, I urge you to remain hopeful. Your situation is not final.”
In his address, Senator Akobundu expressed deep appreciation to the widows for their unwavering support and prayers, acknowledging their critical role in his life and political journey.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for standing by me through thick and thin,” he began. “Your prayers, encouragement, and resilience have been a source of strength for me, and I do not take them for granted. You have shown that even in the face of challenges, you remain steadfast, and that inspires me to keep working harder.”
The Senator announced the creation of a dedicated Fund to provide financial assistance to the widows, emphasizing the need to address their unique challenges.
“In recognition of your resilience and the difficulties you face, I am committing to establishing a Fund specifically for widows. This Fund will help address immediate needs, empower you economically, and ensure that you do not feel left behind in our collective progress. It is time we turn our gratitude into tangible actions,” he said.
He also provided updates on significant development projects in the region, particularly the much-anticipated Ahia Eke hospital.
“My commitment to improving healthcare is unwavering. The hospital at Ahia Eke is almost ready to commence operations. The equipment has already been delivered, and doctors and nurses are on their way. This facility will not only serve you and your families but also create job opportunities for many in our community. Quality healthcare should not be a privilege but a right, and we are making that a reality for you,” he assured.
Senator Akobundu further urged the widows to remain united and supportive of one another, emphasizing the strength that comes from community solidarity.
“Let us not forget the power of unity,” he said. “I encourage you all to continue to lean on each other, to pray for one another, and to support one another. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and build a brighter future for our children and grandchildren.”
“Your prayers have brought us this far, and I ask that you do not stop praying for us. Together, we will continue to build a community where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has a chance to thrive. Thank you for your love, your support, and your unshakable faith,” he concluded, drawing resounding applause from the women.
The event concluded with the distribution of bags of rice, cash gifts, and other essential items to the widows.
