Senator Kawu Sumaila is currently the Spokesperson for Northern Senators at the Senate and also Chairman Senate Committee on Sports.
In a twist of fate the Senator seems to have dropped his hat in the senate chamber to head home for an all out fight with his leader and the governor over a grand plot to strip him of his grassroots support going by the nominees lists for the October 26 local government elections in Kano State.
As usual the Group Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NNPP, former governor, presidential aspirant and senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso allegedly handpicks party men loyal to his ambition. He hates to be tagged the godfather but his actions thus far has placed him in that bracket of those ruling by proxy.
It began with the incumbent governor Abba Kabir Yusuf whom against all odds was nominated ahead of many others for been a loyal servant to fly the flag of the party at the 2023 gubernatorial elections in Kano State.
Then nomination of the entire cabinet inclusive of commissioners, the accountant general, the head of service, the secretary to the state government and even the chief of staff.
There were allegations that Abba Kabir Yusuf was just a ‘ driver without a vehicle’, meaning he only instructs the team but not directives as a sitting governor. Kwankwaso approves major decisions and official duties.
Trouble began when Kawu Sumaila spearhead the electoral reforms that will give autonomy to the 774 local government in Nigeria and motion for Tiga State at the red chambers.
This moves pitched the Senator against past and present governors and their stooges. It becane clear he has stepped on a banana peel and must be given the upper cut.
And to strip him of his powers is a plot to build a structure around the 16 local government councils that made up his constituency. The lists has been concluded and forwarded to KANSIEC without his input. It is a move to further strengthen Kwankwaso grip on Kano North at the detriment of Kawu Sumaila.
The same rule applies to all the 44 local government areas where all candidates for the forthcoming local government Chairmanship and councilorship elections were nominated by the godfather of Kano NNPP, Rabiy Musa Kwankwaso.
THE BIG GAMBLE.
Politics has competing values, interest and ambition. It is a GAME of communications, dialogue, negotiation and mediation. Common reasons people leave their jobs is because they were not listened to nor consulted in major decisions, not necessarily about money, but frustrations.
However, most members on the platform of NNPP at the National Assembly are having sleepless night on the next move by Kwankwaso. If the party wins all the local government elections then the Honorable Members will be standing on one leg and the possibility of going back in 2027 may be renegotiated or they are schemed out of the race.
While this plot is on senator Kawu Sumaila has decided to break out and dare the oracle. In his recent outbursts Kawu Sumaila made it clear no man is an Island and he is prepared for the battle ahead.
But his Achilles heels may be other contenders waiting in the wings to have their way to the National Assembly in alliance with Kwankwaso at the slightest move.
That includes former Senator Kabiru Gaya who lost out to Kawu Sumaila at the last elections who is seeking his pound of flesh by making sure he fights back.
As Kawu strategize ahead of the October elections Kwankwaso is negotiating his grip on power to control Kano South, Kano North. He has his grip on Kano Central Senatorial position.
Similarly the All Progressive Congress lay ambush as beneficiaries of the sour relationship between Kwankwaso and his team. The National Chairman of APC Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR is not new to this type of treachery.
He has positioned the party to wrestle power from NNPP in Kano and confine his major rival Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the dustbin of history at the next elections. He has the federal might and the support of NNPP decampees, politicians, the emirates structure, key officers of the national assembly and others to secure victory or they loose out in 2027 to Kwankwaso.
The Deputy Senate President under whose purview Kawu Sumaila is fighting his political battle appears to be the Game Changer for the next elections coming on 26th. He wants to consolidate his hold on Kano North ensuring all the seats are secured and the impact of Kwankwaso diminished.
Government has been described as a social agent that derives its powers from the consent of the electorate. In as much as Abba Kabir Yusuf is delivering on his mandate to Kano, he has a lot to contend with under the present circumstances.
He is faced with the ego of his godfather, the opposition political parties, the current emirate tussle that has engulfed his administration, and the federal might.
His godfather influence has taken its toll on his government which made it impossible for him to breathe. He is now condemned to the chagrin of ‘ Do as I say’ by his mentor.
Kawu Sumaila on the other hand has proven to belong to the bold and fearless generation of politicians who controls the largest local (16) government structure in Nigeria.
