The Unspoken Struggle: Journalists and Marital Crisis

The Unspoken Struggle: Journalists and Marital Crisis

By Charles Edet Ph.D

The journalism profession is known for its demands and pressures, but one of the most significant challenges faced by journalists is often overlooked: marital crisis. Many journalists have suffered in silence, losing their lives, homes, marriages, and children due to the strain of their profession on their personal relationships.

The financial struggles faced by journalists, including poor salaries and dependence on monetary gifts for coverage of assignments, have ruined many marriages. Some male journalists have even suffered physical abuse, while others have become homeless, seeking solace in drink to escape the troubles at home.

So, how can the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) intervene to address this issue? While family privacy is important, the consequences of concealment can be devastating. It is essential for the NUJ to create a safe and supportive environment where journalists can openly discuss their marital challenges without fear of judgment.

*Measures to Earn Respect from Wives*

To avoid marital crisis, it is crucial for journalists to maintain their independence and authority in their relationships. Here are some measures to earn respect from wives:

  1. *Financial independence*: Ensure that your survival does not depend on your woman’s money. Be comfortable before marrying, and avoid begging for assistance or support.
  2. *Self-sufficiency*: Carry the burden of major projects, such as building a house or buying a car, yourself. Avoid relying on your wife’s resources.
  3. *Strong networks*: Build a network of male friends who can support you in times of need.
  4. *Communication*: Openly discuss your financial and personal challenges with your wife, but avoid being dependent on her resources.
  5. *Respect boundaries*: Establish clear boundaries and respect each other’s independence.

By taking these measures, journalists can maintain their respect and authority in their relationships, reducing the risk of marital crisis. The NUJ can also play a crucial role in supporting journalists through counseling, financial assistance, and creating a supportive community.

Together, we can break the silence and address the unspoken struggle of journalists and marital crisis.
