Waste Management During Harmattan.

Waste Management During Harmattan.

Disposing waste during the harmattan can be challenging and can cause serious environmental and health challenges due to the windy and dry conditions that spread litters and increase pollution when burning of waste has been mostly used in the past.

Let’s work together and support Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA)and the Abia State Orientation Agency in their quest and dedication to keep Abia clean and safe!

đź’ˇSimple Tips for managing waste this season:

-Disposing waste responsibly by using waste bins with proper covering, this prevents waste from being blown around by the wind.

Please note covered waste bins also reduce unpleasant odors and keep pests’ Open defecation should be discouraged and the construction of public toilets should be initiated as Corporate Social Responsibility CSR to help the Government.

-Burning of waste during harmattan appears to be one practice common amongst our people, this practice should be discouraged because of the danger of fire outbreaks, toxic smoke released in the air worsen respiratory problems and harm the environment. Instead let’s come up with proper channels to dispose our waste.

-Waste Separation:

This technique remains very useful in waste management, sorting of waste reduces the amount of waste and supports sustainability.

-Clean Your Surroundings Regularly:

Aside from the monthly sanitation exercise, sweeping, cleaning of gutters will help prevent our drainage systems from blocking when the rain comes.

-Spread the news and not the waste:

Awareness and sensitization remains the main key in informing and educating the public, this is very important because study shows that our behaviour towards waste is largely responsible for the challenges been witnessed.

So, let’s share these tips with family, friends and community. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener and healthy Abia State during this harmattan and beyond.

Please with the Yuletide season that is filled with celebrations, I urge our people to consider matters of waste management while planning events.

A clean Abia State benefits us all.
